Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between life insurance and critical illness cover?
Life insurance pays out a lump sum or regular income if you die during the policy term. Critical illness cover pays out a tax-free lump sum if you are diagnosed with a specific serious illness covered by the policy — such as certain cancers, heart attacks or strokes — while you are still alive. The two products serve different purposes and many clients choose to hold both. TLD advises on both types and will recommend the right combination based on your circumstances and budget.
How much life insurance do I need?
There is no single right answer — the appropriate amount depends on your mortgage balance, other debts, your family's living costs, the number of dependants you have and what you want to provide for in the future. A common starting point is ten times your annual income, but a proper conversation about your specific circumstances gives a far more accurate figure. TLD will assess your protection needs as part of a free consultation at no obligation.
What is income protection and who needs it?
Income protection pays a regular monthly income if you are unable to work due to illness or injury — covering a far broader range of conditions than critical illness cover, including stress, anxiety, back problems and other conditions that do not trigger a critical illness payout. It continues until you return to work or the policy ends. It is particularly important for self-employed people who have no employer sick pay, and for households where one income is essential to meeting mortgage payments and everyday costs.
What is family income benefit and how is it different to life insurance?
Family income benefit pays your family a regular monthly or annual income for the remainder of the policy term if you die, rather than a single lump sum. This can be more practical and cost-effective for families with young children who need ongoing support rather than a large amount to manage and invest. It is also typically more affordable than an equivalent level term life insurance policy because the total payout reduces over time as the remaining policy term shortens.
Can TLD place my protection policy in trust?
Yes — and TLD recommends this where appropriate, at no extra cost. Placing a life insurance or family income benefit policy in trust means the benefit passes directly to your chosen beneficiaries rather than forming part of your estate. This has two practical advantages: it can reduce or remove an inheritance tax liability on the payout, and it typically pays out significantly faster since it does not need to go through probate. TLD will explain whether a trust is appropriate for your circumstances during the advice process. TLD does not provide tax advice — your own tax position should be confirmed with a qualified tax adviser.
What is business protection insurance?
Business protection insurance covers a business against the financial impact of an owner, director or key employee dying or becoming seriously ill. This includes key person insurance — which protects the business against the loss of someone whose skills or relationships are critical to its operation — and shareholder or partnership protection, which provides funds for remaining owners to buy out a deceased or seriously ill co-owner's share of the business. TLD advises business owners across Stockport and Greater Manchester on the most appropriate structure for their business and circumstances.
